The safety of our customers and employees is our top priority. In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, we have temporarily closed our retail location at Columbia State Historic Park. We are doing our part to help "flatten the curve" and will be monitoring the situation closely. We look forward to re-opening when it is safe and hope to see you again soon!
In the meantime, we are working hard to open our new online store in the next couple of days so that you can order many of our unique and popular items from the comfort of home. Stay tuned.
Located in the historic gold mining town of Columbia, California, the Columbia Booksellers & Variety Store offers a unique shopping experience for merchandise that one might find available during the peak of the gold rush period between 1850-1870.
Entering the original brick store, built in 1854, is like stepping back in time with storekeepers dressed in period attire, hardwood floors creaking beneath your feet, and the warm glow of original lighting fixtures. You will delight in our large selection of books, toys, accouterments, musical instruments, replicas, collectibles, novelties, crafts, art, and souvenirs at attractive prices. Spend a few minutes or a few hours perusing our goods, including a selection of Chinese and Native American items, and you’re sure to find something unique to bring home with you to remember your visit to Columbia.
Afterward, be sure to take a ride on the stagecoach, but secure your valuables as there have been reports of robbers on the old stage road. Try your luck panning for gold. Appeal to your creative side by making some candles. Stop in at the blacksmith shop to see a working forge and pick up your lucky horseshoe. Satisfy your sweet tooth with homemade fudge or ice cream at the candy shops. Examine the museum and interpretive displays throughout the park that tell the story of Columbia’s rich gold mining history, or take a guided tour with a knowledgeable docent. Don't miss the unique shops around town, and then fill your appetite with several delicious dining choices. There’s plenty to see and do in Columbia State Historic Park, and we look forward to welcoming you soon!

Meet the Proprietors
Michael and Rosanna Sharps are the proprietors of the new Columbia Booksellers & Variety Store which opened on April 20, 2019. After years of Civil War reenacting and renaissance fairs, it seems only fitting to be dressing up in period attire every day and operating a store that is filled with all of the things that align with our interests and hobbies. Rosanna is a creative and talented seamstress, crafter, and author who is writing the third book of her historical fiction series, "Golden Harvest," which will hit the store shelves in the latter half of 2019. Michael is a web developer and photographer and has several framed canvas prints of his work featured and available at the store. Please drop in and say "hello," we look forward to seeing you soon!
